Gary Golightly, Associate Professor of Graphic Design, has a poster featured in the book Presenting Shakespeare: 1,100 Posters from Around the World, by Steven Heller and Mirko Ilic, published by Princeton Architectural Press last fall. Major donors have helped the Gallery host special public exhibitions on subjects ranging from ancient Pompeii to Andy Warhol. Some of our current seniors were able to display their work alongside, staff, faculty and alumni from Vanderbilt and other local institutions.

Max Dupain 1937 (detail), gelatin silver photograph, 37.9 × 42.8 cm, purchased 1976. The masculine realm was often characterized by outward-directed activities of physical exertion, industry, and business. This collection contains approximately 251 letters written to James Thomas Fields (1817-1881), the publisher and friend of Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), and his wife Annie Adams Fields (1834-1915), between the years 1851-1904 by members of the Hawthorne family and they document both the personal and professional nature of their relationship.

Positive microfilm of both sets are located at both institutions. Beginning in 1887, exhibitions were held once annually and the catalogs began to include illustrations. Paintings appeared in a variety of formats from folding screens and hanging scrolls, which could be appreciated by a group of guests, to albums and handscrolls that were reserved for private enjoyment. Take a look at the sofas, chairs, benches, bar stools, occasional tables, dining room tables, and much more furniture all inside the Frontgate furniture catalog.

To deepen the experience of visual contemplation, the photographs are paired with short pieces of text – both poetry and prose – that invite visitors into a space of rumination. The Goodhue Collection includes designs, drawings, and drawings given by John and Carol Rivers. He has delivered lectures at venues such as New York's Museum of Modern Art, Harvard University, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
